The two last New Yarmouth from Rum Artesanal

I’m a huge fan of Jamaican rums, especially high ester ones and New Yarmouth rums used to be extreme !
This year the german independent bottler « Rum Artesanal » released two New Yarmouth at a really fair price. On the paper they seem to be very different, are they really?

Rum Artesanal New Yarmouth 2009-2020 (66.9%, cask #190, 289 bottles)

Colour : Gold.
Nose : Polish, lemon, mango, green banana, tropical fruits, acidulous. With more time it become sweeter like a fresh baked cake. The nose is not as extreme as some well known NY 2005.
Mouth : It’s thick. There are esters, candies, it’s fruity and strong but with sweetness in the background. The alcohol is really well integrated.
The second mouth is sweeter. We have cakes, sugar, cinnamon and roasted notes.
Finish : Mid-long and dry with candied fruits and dark smoke.

This one is different than other NY I tasted, less extreme, a bit sweeter, but everything match, good job!

Score : 87

Rum Artesanal New Yarmouth 1994-2020 (67.7%, cask #203 & #204, 709 bottles)

Colour : Dark. We can definitely see it’s 25yo tropically aged at first look.
Nose : Strong and sweet at the same time, roasted, a bit spicy, esters, caramel.
Mouth : It’s rich and powerful but the alcohol is really well integrated, a bunch of grapes, bitter, fuel, old wood, tobacco, a bit fruity, is this a New Yarmouth?
It’s closer to a tropical Demerara than any other New Yarmouth to be honest.
Finish : Mid-long, roasted, dried fruits, pretty much similar to the mouth so no surprise there.

Totally different from what I could expect from a tropically aged 25 years old New Yarmouth. I think it’s the result of low esters and tropical aging. This one is a surprise for everyone, for me included, and I like it !

Score : 89

I liked them both, they have at least something similar, they’re very far from what you can imagine when you read the label…
