Monymusk’s are boring in my opinion, but I heard by my friend Alex I should taste this one, it was bottled by Velier for Giuseppe Begnoni (one of the biggest whisky collector & a friend of Luca Gargano). 22 years of tropical ageing, could it change my mind?
Vélier Monymusk 1997-2019 for Giuseppe Begnoni (67.9°, EMB, tropical ageing, 2 casks, 442 bottles)
Colour : Dark copper.
Nose : Boom, esters explosion ! Strong coffee, light wood, tropical fruits, papaya, pineapple, fuel in the background, it remind me the NY 1994 in some way!
Powerful but the alcohol is perfectly integrated. With time it’s more fruity and acidulous with the Granny Smith apple.
Mouth : The first sip is powerful with a huge range of flavours. Coffee, caramel, apple, black grapes, cherries, quince, brine, noble wood, and obviously peppermint.
Finish : Very long, iodized, woody, spicy, a beautiful finish under the freshness of peppermint.
Usually I don’t like rums from Monymusk because of their lack of character, this one is another world.
Powerful, complex, I loved it. Grazie Luca & Giuseppe, you did it!
And of course thanks Alex for the sample!
