I had the pleasure to meet the very nice Joshua Singh (SBS founder) in the Belgian Salon du Rhum. There are his six new bottlings. There are some unusual countries in the list, I can’t wait to try so let’s go!
SBS Barbados 2000-2020 (53.2%, 258 bottles)
Colour: Deep gold.
Nose: Not any doubt we’re in Barbados here. Coco, vanilla, caramel, melted chocolate, leather. The alcohol burns a bit. There are also some interesting mineral and iodized notes. Grains, wheat, dark chocolate, wood, baked apples surrounded by an herbal freshness.
Mouth: Nice oily texture. It starts again with coconuts and vanilla, caramel cream, yellow fruits, noble wood, tannins, leather and the mineral notes come back at the end of the mouth.
Finish: Long and fresh. Milk chocolate, eucalyptus, peppermint and cocoa.
It’s a bit too classic in my opinion, I miss some extra special feelings but if you use to like Barbados rums you should love it.
SBS Australia 2007-2020 (55%, 323 bottles)
Colour: Copperish gold.
Nose: The alcohol is too dominant and crush the aromas. Solvents, glue, fresh paint. It’s acidulous with sour cherries, grapefruits juice, maraschino, grass and lemons.
Mouth: It’s acidulous again. Cherry pits, plums, violet candies, red berries, gooseberries, dandelions, roses and some polish.
Finish: Mid-long. It’s dry and a bit astringent with sugary notes, glue and vanilla.
I find its personality a bit young but it has some charm even with those imperfections.
SBS Brazil 2011-2020 (56.7%, 264 bottles)
Nose: The alcohol is a bit too present. Arabica coffee beans, cocoa, flour, unripe bananas, fresh cane, brown sugar, wet wood, persimmons, melons, flowers, vanilla, Belgian speculoos, cinnamon and some candle wax.
Mouth: Sweet start with some fresh cane. Then it’s dry with pickles, burnt oak wood, dried fruits, apricots and nuts.
Finish: Mid-long. It’s warm and sweet. White pepper, nuts, solid wood and some bitterish notes.
The nose truly surprised me! It’s not the kind of profile I use to like but it’s not a bad rum at all.
SBS El Salvador 2008-2020 (55%, 318 bottles)
Nose: Sour cherries, toffee, pineapples, young wood, solvants, mangoes, lemons, grapefruits, blood oranges, sweet and sour sauce and some herbal notes.
Mouth: Again those sour notes. Lemons, wood, roasted dried fruits, hazelnuts, pineapples, figs and leather. It’s a bit too monolithic.
Finish: Mid-Long. It’s warm with caramel, toffee and hot chocolate.
This one is too flat, it lacks some fantasy.
SBS Guyana 2003-2020 (59.7%, 258 bottles)
Colour: Light gold.
Nose: I always try to identify the still when I drink a Guyana and it’s not specified, so at first nose I can say Versailles or Port Mourant. Liquorice, melting chocolate, cider, green apples, white pepper, steel with some citruses and spicy notes.
Mouth: It’s very easy to drink. Liquorice again, wet wood, weld, metal, bitter, almonds, vanilla, black olives, tobacco leaves, spices. It’s dry, metallic and bitterish, I think I got it!
Finish: Long. It’s dry again with wood, badian, tobacco and roasted coffee beans.
I’m pretty sure this one is a Port Mourant, with some Versailles notes, anyway it’s a great one.
SBS Fiji 2009-2020 (57%, 253 bottles)
Nose: Glue, exotic fruits, bananas, soil, fertilizers, green olives, fuels, apricots, black tea and some herbal freshness. Very well-balanced nose between fruity and vegetal profile.
Mouth: It’s warm and very flavourful. Spices, tannins, oak, « banane flambée » notes, exotic fruits, olives, burnt wood. It’s slightly bitterish as well.
Finish: Mid-long. The smoke dries out the mouth, tobacco leaves, slightly peppered with some floral notes in the background.
The two sides of the Fiji rums are presents there, fruity and vegetal, a beautiful balance from the nose to the finish, good job!
My favourite one is the surprising Fiji 2009, but I can say there’s no bad rum there. It’s important to notice that these bottles are released at very fair price. After rereading everything I just noticed the less powerful rum is at 53.2%, I can deduce the legend about the danish rum is true…
